Since may Germany's highest bus stop can be reached by public bus: The driving season on the Kehlstein line, which climbs 770 meters in altitude over 6.5 kilometers, has started. The route starts at the bus departure point at Obersalzberg and runs along the Kehlstein road to the turning point at an altitude of 1710 meters. The street is closed for cars. Upon arrival at the Kehlstein parking lot, passengers can directly let enter their return time.
From the terminal stop, a lift leads 124 metres higher up to the Kehlsteinhaus, The Kehlsteinline is operated daily - depending on the weather - until the end of October.
The drive along the Kehlsteinstraße takes about 20 minutes, leads through five tunnels and offers breathtaking views.
The Kehlsteinhaus is a representative building built by the National Socialists in 1938 below the summit at an altitude of 1834 metres. In 1951, the house and the Kehlstein road passed to the district of Berchtesgaden, which set up a bus line. Today the house is run as a restaurant. The income is going to charitable institutions in the district. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg is located immediately to the Hintereck departure point. Information about the history of the Nazi dictatorship and Obersalzberg is provided in the former NSDAP guest house and in exposed bunker facilities.
